KINETIC CHAIN SEQUENCING: A BIOMECHANICS PRIMER

1. Executive Summary

In diamond sports, exit velocity and throwing speed are not created by arm or upper-body strength in isolation. They are the emergent result of proximal-to-distal energy flow across a linked series of anatomical segments: Foot/Ankle → Knee → Pelvis → Thoracic Spine → Scapula → Elbow → Wrist → Ball/Bat.

2. The Proximal-to-Distal Sequencing Chain

For maximum projectile speed, each preceding bodily segment must reach its peak angular velocity and rapidly decelerate to transfer its momentum to the next smaller, distal segment:

  • Phase 1: Ground Force Production. Linear drive produces vertical ($F_z$) and shear ($F_y$) ground reaction forces ($1.5\times - 2.5\times$ body mass).
  • Phase 2: Pelvic Rotation & Sudden Braking. Front-foot contact initiates rapid pelvic rotation ($600^\circ - 800^\circ/\text{s}$), which must decelerate violently through an isometric lead-leg block ($140^\circ - 160^\circ$ knee extension).
  • Phase 3: Torso Whip & Oblique Elasticity. The pelvis deceleration stretches the torso muscles across a $32^\circ - 45^\circ$ separation angle, accelerating the torso to $900^\circ - 1200^\circ/\text{s}$.
  • Phase 4: Scapular & Arm Delivery. Scapular upward rotation slots the elbow at an $85^\circ - 105^\circ$ angle, delivering terminal hand velocities exceeding $2000^\circ/\text{s}$.

3. Energy Bleed Markers & Injury Triggers

  • Soft Lead-Leg Block (<130°): Absorbs lower-body force into the quadriceps, forcing the upper body to "push" the ball/bat.
  • Early Torso Opening (<25° Separation): Rotates the chest before the pelvis clears, causing extreme shoulder anterior capsule strain.
  • Elbow Extension Drag (>115° at foot strike): Drastically increases valgus torque across the Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL).
