WBSC BASEBALL5 URBAN COURT SETUP & GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT GUIDE

Document Reference: DOC-08-B5-2026

Effective Date: August 2026

Author: Faculty of Infrastructure, Grounds & Grassroots Expansion

Regulatory Alignment: World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Official Baseball5 Rulebook

SECTION 1: PURPOSE & PHILOSOPHY OF ACCESSIBILITY

1.1. Objective: This technical guide codifies the setup, surface adaptations, tactical mechanics, and community clinic delivery for Baseball5—the WBSC-sanctioned urban discipline designed for low-cost implementation across schools, community halls, urban centers, and rural dirt clearings.

1.2. Zero-Gear Mandate: The game requires only one official rubber ball and zero specialized personal equipment (no bats, no gloves, no protective gear).

SECTION 2: COURT DIMENSIONS & URBAN SPATIAL GEOMETRY

18.00 m outfield boundary13.00 mNo-hit zone r = 4.50 mHome · batter's box 3 × 3 m1st · double bag2nd3rd52413

Architectural court plan: 13 m base paths, 4.5 m no-hit arc, 3 m × 3 m batter's box, double safety bag at first base and the five defensive stations.

2.1. Spatial Specifications:

* Total Fair Territory: $18\text{ m} \times 18\text{ m } (59\text{ ft } \frac{3}{4}\text{ in} \times 59\text{ ft } \frac{3}{4}\text{ in})$ square infield diamond.

* Base Paths: $13.00\text{ m } (42.65\text{ ft})$ between each consecutive base.

* Home Plate / Batter’s Box: A $3.00\text{ m} \times 3.00\text{ m}$ square box positioned with home plate at its center.

* The No-Hit Zone: A marked arc/triangle with a radius of $4.50\text{ m } (14.76\text{ ft})$ measured from the rear point of home plate into fair territory. Batted balls touching the ground inside this zone are dead balls / immediate outs.

* Safe Base at 1st Base: First base includes a double-base setup (Fair base: $50\text{ cm} \times 50\text{ cm}$ inside fair line; Foul/Safety base: $50\text{ cm} \times 50\text{ cm}$ outside fair line) to prevent runner-defender collisions.

SECTION 3: SURFACE CONVERSION & MARKING METHODOLOGIES

3.1. Surface Adaptations:

* Concrete & Asphalt (Playgrounds / Parking Lots): Use semi-permanent polyurethane traffic paint or heavy-duty vinyl floor adhesive tape ($5\text{ cm}$ line width).

* Indoor Sports Halls / Gymnasiums: Use non-marking athletic floor tape.

* Packed Dirt & Grass Clearings: Mark boundaries with agricultural lime, chalk powder, or shallow surface incisions scored into compacted clay.

3.2. Low-Cost Perimeter Containment:

* Where permanent perimeter fences ($1.00\text{ m}$ height) are unavailable, mark an exterior out-of-bounds boundary line $3.00\text{ m}$ beyond the fair lines using orange cones placed every $2.00\text{ m}$.

SECTION 4: CORE RULES & TECHNICAL MECHANICS

4.1. Offensive Striking Mechanics (Hitting Without a Bat):

* The batter must enter the $3\text{ m} \times 3\text{ m}$ box, self-toss the ball into the air, and strike it cleanly using the open palm, clenched fist, or heel of the hand.

* The Legal Hit Requirement: The struck ball must clear the $4.5\text{ m}$ No-Hit Zone and bounce at least once in fair territory before passing the outfield boundary or foul lines.

* Immediate Out Conditions on Hits:

1. Ball fails to cross the $4.5\text{ m}$ No-Hit Zone line on the fly or first bounce.

2. Ball struck in the air leaves the court perimeter without touching fair ground (over-the-fence home runs are illegal/outs in Baseball5).

3. Batter steps on or outside the $3\text{ m} \times 3\text{ m}$ box lines during the strike.

4.2. Five-Player Defensive Positioning:

* The defense fields five players concurrently: 1st Base, 2nd Base, 3rd Base, Shortstop, and Midfielder (stationed behind 2nd base to cover outfield rebounds). No pitcher is used.

4.3. Mixed-Gender Team Roster Rules:

* Official WBSC competition mandates mixed-gender participation: teams must field at least two (2) players of the opposite gender on the court at all times throughout all 5 innings.

SECTION 5: GRASSROOTS CLINIC DELIVERY BLUEPRINT (60-MINUTE FORMAT)

* 00–10 Min: Dynamic Warm-up & Hand-Eye Reflex Drills (Reaction ball wall tosses).

* 10–25 Min: Striking Mastery (Palm topspin striking, low-line-drive placement beyond the 4.5m arc).

* 25–40 Min: Barehand Infield Groundwork & Quick-Release Relays ($13\text{ m}$ rapid throwing circuits).

* 40–60 Min: Structured 5-Inning Mixed-Gender Exhibition Match.
