SECTION 1: PURPOSE & GRASSROOTS MANDATE
1.1. Objective: This field manual provides turnkey engineering instructions for converting irregular, unpaved open fields, municipal schoolyards, and community clearings into safe, regulation Baseball, Fastpitch Softball, and Baseball5 playing facilities using low-cost, locally sourced materials.
1.2. Budget Constraint: All specifications are calibrated for execution under a target budget of $500 – $1,500 USD without heavy commercial earthmoving machinery.
SECTION 2: FIELD ORIENTATION & SITE SELECTION
2.1. Solar Azimuth Alignment:
- The theoretical line drawn from the rear apex of Home Plate through the Pitcher's Mound to Second Base must point East-Northeast ($45^\circ \text{ to } 90^\circ$ azimuth).
- Critical Safety Rationale: Prevents the setting sun from blinding the batter, catcher, or plate umpire during late-afternoon fixtures.
2.2. Safety Perimeter Margins:
- Backstop Buffer: Minimum unobstructed clearance of $25\text{ ft } (7.62\text{ m})$ behind Home Plate.
- Sideline Clearance: Minimum $20\text{ ft } (6.10\text{ m})$ from foul lines to any fixed obstruction, drainage ditch, or spectator zone.
SECTION 3: PYTHAGOREAN BASE LAYOUT & ANCHORING GEOMETRY
Using a non-stretch fiberglass tape measure and steel marking pegs, infield diamonds are squared using the Right-Triangle Hypotenuse Principle ($a^2 + b^2 = c^2$):
Right-triangle anchoring: two base paths (a) at 90° with the illuminated diagonal hypotenuse (c) from home plate to second base. Pitching distance: 60 ft 6 in (18.44 m).
3.0. Layman's Visual Guide (read this before the matrix):
- The Anti-Crooked Lock: Measuring only the outer base paths (for example four $90\text{ ft}$ sides) still allows a slanted, rhombus-shaped diamond — four equal sides do not guarantee four square corners. The long diagonal from Home Plate to 2nd Base ($c$) is the rigid cross-brace: once that single measurement is correct, every corner is mathematically locked to exactly $90^\circ$.
- The Two-Tape Triangle Trick: You never need a protractor, transit or laser angle tool to find 1st and 3rd Base. Hook one tape at Home Plate and a second tape at 2nd Base, then pull both tight until their base-path numbers touch. Where the two numbers meet is the base corner — the geometry does the angle-measuring for you.
- Worked example (Baseball5): An $18\text{ m} \times 18\text{ m}$ playing area contains a $13\text{ m} \times 13\text{ m}$ infield diamond ($a = 13.00\text{ m}$), so $c = \sqrt{13^2 + 13^2} = \sqrt{338} \approx \mathbf{18.38\text{ m}}$ ($18\text{ m } 38\text{ cm}$).
Tape 1 (Home → 1B/3B): 90 ft 0 in | Tape 2 (2B → 1B/3B): 90 ft 0 in | Diagonal (Home → 2B): 127 ft 3⅜ in | Pitching: 60 ft 6 in
Drive Peg 1 at the rear apex of home plate, then shoot a straight line forward through the centre axis of the field.
3.1. Dimensional Reference Matrix:
| Diamond Discipline | Side Length ($a$) [Home $\to$ 1B & 3B] | Pitching Distance | Cross-Corner Diagonal ($c$) [Home $\to$ 2B & 1B $\to$ 3B] |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Regulation Baseball | $90\text{ ft } (27.43\text{ m})$ | $60\text{ ft } 6\text{ in } (18.44\text{ m})$ | $\mathbf{127\text{ ft } 3\frac{3}{8}\text{ in } (38.79\text{ m})}$ |
| Fastpitch Softball | $60\text{ ft } (18.29\text{ m})$ | $43\text{ ft } (13.11\text{ m})$ | $\mathbf{84\text{ ft } 10\frac{1}{4}\text{ in } (25.86\text{ m})}$ |
| Youth / Little League | $60\text{ ft } (18.29\text{ m})$ | $46\text{ ft } (14.02\text{ m})$ | $\mathbf{84\text{ ft } 10\frac{1}{4}\text{ in } (25.86\text{ m})}$ |
| Baseball5 Urban Court | $13\text{ m } (42.65\text{ ft})$ | *No Pitcher* | $\mathbf{18.38\text{ m } (60.32\text{ ft})}$ |
> How to read this table: Pick your sport, hook your tape at Home Plate, measure straight across to 2nd Base using the Cross-Corner Diagonal, then set your side lines using the Side Length.
3.2. Step-by-Step Anchoring Sequence:
Required gear: two non-stretch measuring tapes ($\ge 20\text{ m}$ each), four ground marker pegs or pins, and marking chalk or tape.
1. Anchor Home Plate: Drive Peg 1 as a permanent steel stake at the rear apex.
2. Establish the Centerline: Run tape straight forward along the desired compass azimuth through the centre axis of the playing area to mark the Pitcher's Rubber and Second Base.
3. Anchor Second Base: Pull tape down the centreline to the calculated diagonal hypotenuse ($c$) and drive Peg 2 at the outer corner of Second Base.
4. Locate First Base: Hook Tape 1 at Home Plate (Peg 1) and Tape 2 at Second Base (Peg 2), unspool both to the right of the centreline, and pull tight until the base-distance ($a$) mark on Tape 1 meets the same mark on Tape 2. Drive Peg 3 at that intersection — the rear outside corner of First Base.
5. Locate Third Base: Repeat step 4 to the left of the centreline and drive Peg 4 at the intersection.
3.3. Practical Field-Check Tips:
- Sanity Check Rule: Measure straight across from First Base to Third Base. It MUST equal the exact same diagonal distance ($c$) as Home to Second Base. If it does not, one corner is shifted and must be re-snapped.
- Tape Sag Warning: Keep non-stretch fiberglass tapes pulled taut and lifted clear of the grass. Letting a tape lie in turf adds $3 - 6\text{ in } (8 - 15\text{ cm})$ of ground-sag error per pull, which compounds across all four corners.
- Baseball5 safety markings: No-Hit Zone — measure $4.50\text{ m}$ up both foul lines from Home Plate and connect those points across the diamond. Batter's Box — centre a $3\text{ m} \times 3\text{ m}$ square over Home Plate, front line $1\text{ m}$ ahead of the plate and back line $2\text{ m}$ behind.
SECTION 4: INFIELD SOIL FORMULATION & DRAINAGE
4.1. Target Soil Stratification Ratio:
- Clay (Cohesion & Binding): $60\% - 70\%$
- Silt (Surface Smoothness): $10\% - 20\%$
- River Sand (Percolation & Moisture Drainage): $20\% - 30\%$
4.2. The Field "Mason Jar" Sedimentation Test:
- Clay · 65%Settles after 24–48 hours
- Silt · 15%Settles after 2 hours
- Sand · 20%Settles after 1 minute
Cross-section of a settled soil sample after shaking. Layer depths are measured against the 60/20/20 infield target ratio.
* Protocol: Fill a straight-sided clear glass jar $\frac{1}{3}$ full of infield soil sample, add clean water until $\frac{4}{5}$ full, add $1\text{ teaspoon}$ of detergent, shake vigorously for 60 seconds, and place on a flat surface.
* Measure individual layer depths at $1\text{ min}$, $2\text{ hours}$, and $48\text{ hours}$ to verify target percentages.
4.3. Surface Drainage Grading:
- Establish a uniform outward crown/slope of $0.5\% \text{ to } 1.0\%$ grade from the pitcher's mound/infield center radiating outward toward the outfield boundaries to shed standing storm water.
Elevation cutaway: a uniform 0.5%–1.0% positive grade radiates from the infield centre outward to the grass line so storm water sheds instead of ponding.
SECTION 5: LOW-COST HARDWARE FABRICATION
5.1. Timber / Bamboo Netting Backstop:
- Poles: Four $18\text{ ft } (5.5\text{ m})$ treated timber poles or mature bamboo stalks sunk $3\text{ ft } (0.9\text{ m})$ into the ground with concrete footings or compacted rock bases.
- Impact Netting: Heavy-duty knotted commercial fishing net ($1.75\text{ inch / } 44\text{ mm}$ mesh size) lashed with weather-resistant polypropylene rope.
5.2. Underground Ground Anchor Sleeves:
- Sink $1.5\text{-inch } (38\text{ mm})$ internal-diameter PVC pipes ($10\text{ inches}$ long) vertically into concrete ground collars flush with the infield skin.
- Fabricate base pegs by bolting hardwood or square steel tubing beneath heavy canvas sacks filled with dense polyurethane foam.
