Document Reference: DOC-04-SCR-2026
Effective Date: August 2026
Author: Faculty of Diamond Sports Analytics, Sabermetrics & Official Scoring
Regulatory Alignment: World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Official Rules
SECTION 1: PURPOSE & REGULATORY MANDATE
1.1. Objective: This standard defines the universal notation symbology, mathematical integrity formulas, inning reconstruction rules, and edge-case decision matrices governing all official scoring, match auditing, and statistical validation across Baseball and Fastpitch Softball.
1.2. Authority: The Official Scorer is the sole executive authority responsible for deciding judgments (Hit vs. Error, Wild Pitch vs. Passed Ball, Fielder's Choice, and Earned vs. Unearned Runs).
SECTION 2: UNIVERSAL SCORING NOTATION & POSITION CODES
2.1. Defensive Position Numbering Matrix:
* 1: Pitcher ($P$)
* 2: Catcher ($C$)
* 3: First Baseman ($1B$)
* 4: Second Baseman ($2B$)
* 5: Third Baseman ($3B$)
* 6: Shortstop ($SS$)
* 7: Left Fielder ($LF$)
* 8: Center Fielder ($CF$)
* 9: Right Fielder ($RF$)
* DP/DH: Designated Player / Designated Hitter
2.2. Primary Play Symbology:
| Outcome Category | Primary Symbol | Sub-Notation Examples |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Base Hits | Single: 1B or -<br>Double: 2B or =<br>Triple: 3B or ≡<br>Home Run: HR or # | 1B 7 (Single to LF)<br>2B 8 (Double to CF)<br>HR 9 (Home run to RF) |
| Strikeouts | Swinging: K<br>Looking: ꓘ (or Kc) | K 2-3 (Dropped 3rd strike, putout at 1B)<br>ꓘ (Called 3rd strike) |
| Groundouts / Putouts | Numbered sequence of touches | 6-3 (Shortstop to 1B)<br>4-3 (2B to 1B)<br>1-3 (Pitcher to 1B) |
| Flyouts / Lineouts | F (Fly), L (Line), P (Pop) | F8 (Flyout CF), L6 (Lineout SS), P4 (Popout 2B) |
| Errors | E + Position Number | E6 (Fielding error SS), E3T (Throwing error 1B) |
| Base Running / Advances | SB (Stolen Base), CS (Caught Stealing), WP (Wild Pitch), PB (Passed Ball), BK (Balk) | SB 4 (Stolen 2B), CS 2-4 (Caught stealing 2B), WP (Advance on wild pitch) |
SECTION 3: COMPLEX SCORING DECISION MATRICES
3.1. Hit vs. Error Judgment Protocol:
* Rule: A base hit is awarded only if the batter reaches base safely through ordinary effort without the aid of a defensive misplay.
* Ordinary Effort Threshold: If a fielder with average defensive skill could have handled the ball with ordinary effort, an Error (E) is charged. Slow-rolling balls, bad hops caused by irregular terrain, or sun-blinded fielders require scorer discretion (benefit of the doubt favors the batter on difficult hops).
3.2. Fielder's Choice Matrix (`FC`):
* If a batter hits a playable ball and reaches first base safely solely because the defense attempts to put out a preceding base runner, the batter is credited with a Fielder's Choice (`FC`), never a base hit, regardless of whether the attempted putout succeeds or fails.
3.3. Wild Pitch (`WP`) vs. Passed Ball (`PB`):
* Wild Pitch (`WP`): Charged to the pitcher when a pitched ball is so high, low, or wide that the catcher cannot stop and control it with ordinary effort.
* Passed Ball (`PB`): Charged to the catcher when the catcher fails to hold or control a pitched ball that should have been handled with ordinary effort.
SECTION 4: THE INNING RECONSTRUCTION PROTOCOL (EARNED VS. UNEARNED RUNS)
To calculate Earned Run Average ($\text{ERA}$), the scorer must hypothetically reconstruct the inning without defensive errors and passed balls:
List the actual play-by-play event sequence
Remove all errors (E), passed balls (PB) and defensive interference
Re-evaluate outs — count the three outs that would have occurred
Advance hypothetical runners on clean hits and walks only
Runs scored after the hypothetical third out are UNEARNED (UER)
Earned/unearned adjudication sequence: any run scoring after the hypothetical third out is unearned (UER).
4.1. Mathematical ERA Formula:
$$\text{ERA} = \frac{9 \times \text{Earned Runs (ER)}}{\text{Innings Pitched (IP)}} \quad \text{(Baseball)}$$
$$\text{ERA} = \frac{7 \times \text{Earned Runs (ER)}}{\text{Innings Pitched (IP)}} \quad \text{(Softball)}$$
SECTION 5: MATHEMATICAL BALANCE-SHEET PROOF
An official match scoresheet is legally valid if and only if both team balance sheets satisfy the fundamental accounting identity:
$$\sum \text{Plate Appearances (PA)} = \sum \text{Runs (R)} + \sum \text{Left on Base (LOB)} + \sum \text{Putouts Made by Opponent (PO)}$$
* If this equation fails to balance, the scoresheet contains an unrecorded advancement, out, or runner discrepancy and is rejected by the sanctioning federation.
